The Host

The host is about a man who must rescue his daughter from a strange beast created by the American government who dumped toxic waste in the Han river.

I actually dislike this film despite its critical praise and is one of the highest grossing films in Korea. I feel like there was a lot of anger in the film which is just. But the film was cringe-worthy as I am an American and we were kind of painted as the bad guy which in this film is true. One can wonder why the first victim of the monster is a white man who was holding hands with a Korean woman.

From blog posts many people in interracial relationships have said to stay away from the Han river as they received more hate there than anywhere else. I honestly wanted to like this film because I am a fan of the director, Bong Joon-ho, who also directed Snowpiercer. So this film leaves me with such a conflicted heart, it was such a hard task to watch this film.

The monster was horribly done in my opinion it felt really fake with not a lot of detail. My favorite part of the film is the sound because it was done so well that each sound matched the scene perfectly. The film is based on true events, as an American organization actually did throw their toxic waste in the Han river.

My rating for The Host is 1/5
