Truly loved this film, this made me into a Choi Min-sik fan. Now if you have only seen romantic Korean films then you are in a whole different world. This film is gritty, full of violence, desperation, hate, pain, solitude, destruction, and salvation.
This film was directed by Park Chan-wook, someone I am not a fan of since I saw his film
Thirst. He managed to do wonderful work in this film, he takes you on a roller coaster ride of a lifetime. Some of you might say, "What the f*ck" at some parts or that might have been just me.
Oldboy is about a man that is kidnapped and held in a room by himself for 15 years. Until one day. he wakes up inside a box on a rooftop that overlooks the city. He has no idea where is or who put him there, but he is going to find out the hard way with a hammer.
If you do not like violence this film is not for you, this film dives into the darker side of humanity that we all know exists but are afraid to talk about. You have been warned!
I love the grittiness of the film, there really isn't anything clean in the whole room. It paints a more realistic side of the world with a morbid twist that the director did perfectly well. Choi Min Sik does such a wonderful job, I find his acting to be addicting to watch to the point you believe in him. Don't worry it's not all action but most of it is. The film is filled with paranoia and fear that you suspect the worse. You often get the worst path, this film is not a happy film.
This is truly an amazing piece of cinema from South Korea. I might return to re-blog this post if I decide to watch the American version to compare and contrast.
