Kundo: Age of the Rampant

A butcher causes the events that leave his life in ruin. He joins an infamous outlaw group and slowly becomes a respected member. They plan to punish the corrupt officials by stealing their property.

Dolmuchi/Dolchi (Ha Jung-woo) is a former butcher who failed to commit an assassination. In result, his house was burned to the ground with him, his mother, and sister still inside. Dolmuchi is the only survivor, but he is badly burned. Despite his wounds, Dolmuchi manages to join the outlaw group Kundo. In time, he becomes a respected member and an infamous outlaw. His heart burns for revenge against Jo Yoon, the gifted illegitimate son of a nobleman who made a deadly deal for Dolmuchi. If Dolmuchi can kill his younger half brother's wife, he will be given a lot of money. Due to certain reasons, Dolmuchi is unable to do the deed. He is the kind of character that is slightly annoying at times, but you feel for him and that is a very important element to story-telling.

Jo Yoon (Kang Dong-won) is the son of a concubine and nobleman. He is very gifted but has a big problem. He gets a younger brother, as an illegitimate child Jo Yoon is no longer needed but is kept in the house. With a cold heart, Jo Yoon orders the death of his sister-in-law. He is a talented swordsman who just wants his father's respect. You feel for him at least, but he becomes the villain of the film rather quickly once you realize a certain aspect of his nature. In the end, he does try to make up for his mistakes but it is too late for him to atone for his sins.

This film was a letdown, it could have had real value, but it fails to be anything good. I think it was a fatal error to cast Kang Dong-won and Ha Jung-woo. Both failed to be entertaining, Kang Dong-won's performance was very weak. I found both characters were annoying and poorly written. The script was badly done and the plot a little dull. A lot of the other casting choices were poorly done as well. I was not excited after watching this film, I was utterly bored. Even though it has a good rating of IMDb, I believe this film is a bit of a waste of time.
